If you’re anything like me, having a plan is essential! I thrive on preparation, especially when addressing a large audience. I meticulously map out every detail, and let’s be honest—humor is my secret weapon. Tackling serious workplace issues can be heavy, but a well-timed joke can lighten the mood and foster deeper connections.
But what happens when your plan falls flat?
Last fall, I had a joke I was convinced would land perfectly during a keynote speech. I could almost hear the laughter in my head. When the moment arrived, however, the response was… crickets. Silence. It felt like I’d dropped a lead balloon!
Instead of letting the awkwardness linger, I decided to own it. I acknowledged my failed joke, turning it into a moment of humor. Suddenly, the audience erupted in genuine laughter—not at the joke, but at my candidness. What started as a flub transformed into a shared experience, turning my Plan A flop into a successful Plan B.
Of course, we caught the flub on video! 😂 Give the image below a click to view it in all its glory.

Embracing humor and agility is at the heart of compassionate leadership. Mistakes happen, and being able to laugh at ourselves fosters resilience and motivates those around us. We’re all human, and even the best-laid plans can go awry.
So, how do you handle mistakes when they occur?
From my experience, there’s immense value in acknowledging our flaws. These moments often lead to deeper connections and understanding. Compassionate leadership means fostering an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth, not failures.
When we embrace our imperfections, we encourage others to do the same, creating a culture where vulnerability is celebrated. This is how we cultivate resilience and forge genuine connections.
Moving Forward with Humor
Next time you find yourself in a challenging situation, remember to embrace the unexpected. Laugh at your missteps and pivot to Plan B with confidence. You might discover that the detours lead to the most rewarding experiences.
Let’s commit to celebrating our humanity—flaws and all—using humor to connect, inspire, and uplift those around us. Sometimes, the best plans are the ones we never saw coming.
